Corporate Social Responsibility

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At Cimpress, we are focused on building a transformational and enduring business for the mutual benefit of customers, team members, long-term investors, and society. This includes our contributions toward an inclusive and sustainable future.

We integrate sustainability into all aspects of our businesses. We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment, championing inclusion and diversity, and strengthening the communities in which we operate, work, source, and sell. We require all parts of Cimpress to conduct business in a manner that continues to make team members proud of our collective actions.

SUSTAINABILITY IS INGRAINED IN OUR BUSINESS MODEL

With more than a dozen mass customization businesses collectively serving tens of millions of customers every year, Cimpress’ highly efficient business model serves customers better than traditional alternatives, with less environmental impact.

Traditional business models force customers to purchase custom products in large quantities per order or incur significant waste to produce a small order. Unlike mass production, where large quantities of the same product are produced, our model of mass customization ensures orders are aggregated with those of other customers and fulfilled only after a customer purchases it. This minimizes overproduction, waste, and carbon emissions. In allowing orders to be placed at the right size and for the right price, we offer the product varieties, quality, and value that our customers are looking for. As we strive to create a more sustainable world, we are proud to be helping these businesses grow and contribute toward a healthy and resilient economy – one right-sized order at a time.

Protecting the Environment

WE CONSISTENTLY INVEST TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF OUR OPERATIONS AND PRODUCTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT.

Carbon Reduction

As one of the greatest challenges of our time, we recognize that climate change requires swift and bold action. We are accelerating our long-standing decarbonization efforts across our direct operations and supply chain, aligned with our commitment to achieve net zero emissions by FY2040 across our entire value chain (Scopes 1-3) and to achieve a 53% reduction in emissions by FY2030 (compared to FY2019 baseline).

Our commitment has been informed by a science-based approach and ensures we are doing our part to contribute toward a 1.5°C emissions pathway. Through investments in energy-efficient operations and sourcing renewable energy, such as improved lighting and HVAC efficiency, transitioning to LED offset presses, and onsite solar installations, we have reduced our direct (Scope 1 and 2) carbon emissions by 22% between FY2019 and FY2023.

However, as is the case for most businesses, the majority of our emissions result from our supply chain (Scope 3), so we have expanded our focus in those areas, as well. We are focused on transitioning our substrate and logistics choices toward lower-carbon alternatives, as these represent the vast majority of our Scope 3 emissions. We continue to engage our businesses and suppliers to improve emissions measurement and evaluate opportunities for decarbonization across our value chain.

Responsibly Sourced Paper

The printing industry has a tremendous impact on the world’s forests, and the long-term health of forests is key to our ability to build an enduring business. As a company that plays a role in the forestry eco-system, we take responsibility for helping to safeguard our planet’s resources. We do this by using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)-certified materials for our wood-fibre products. These certifications ensure that the wood used in our products is sourced in an environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically prosperous way. We aim to increase and expand our use of certified materials through our FY2025 targets:

  • 100% of wood fibre products produced in Cimpress facilities comes from FSC or PEFC-certified sources*
  • 95% of wood-fibre products produced on behalf of Cimpress by third party fulfillers (3PFs) comes from FSC or PEFC-certified sources**
  • 95% of Cimpress packaging comes from FSC or PEFC-certified sources or meets minimum post consumer waste (PCW) requirements*

*Suppliers of PEFC-certified materials used by Cimpress’ businesses with operations located outside the EU must provide evidence/assurance of the same level compliance with the EUDR as a supplier that is selling paper into the EU.

Plastics Transition

We are improving the profile of our plastic-based packaging and products in line with the targets set by the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, co-sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme. We have made great progress so far and have set the following FY2025 goals to drive greater circularity:

  • Eliminate 100% of problematic plastics (PVC and polystyrene) in our packaging and products
  • Transition 100% of non-reusable packaging to recyclable and/or compostable materials
  • Increase the recycled content in our plastic products by 20% against our FY2020 baseline, to a minimum of 20% recycled content
  • Decrease our use of virgin, fossil-fuel based plastic content in our packaging by at least 20% through a combination of plastic elimination and increased recycled content

We continue to pay close attention to ongoing developments in the recycling sector, being led by national governments and industry groups, as we enhance the recyclability, reusability, and composability of our products and work toward our internal target on this front.

Caring for Team Members

OUR TEAM MEMBERS ARE THE HEART OF OUR COMPANY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO US THAT OUR COMPENSATION AND LABOR PRACTICES ARE FAIR AND ENVIRONMENTS ARE RESPECTFUL, SAFE, DIVERSE, AND INCLUSIVE.

Safety

Maintaining a safe workplace for all team members and visitors continues to be a top priority. We do not tolerate unsafe conditions that may endanger team members or visitors to our facilities. We equip our team members and visitors with the gear and knowledge necessary to ensure their safety on our production plant floors and require training on safe work practices and procedures at all manufacturing facilities. At our office locations, we regularly run training and safety drills. We continue to take every reasonable precaution for the protection of our team members and visitors and require legal compliance to workplace health and safety legislation, at a minimum, at all times.

Fair Labor Practices

We make recruiting, retention, and other performance management decisions based solely on merit and other organizational needs and considerations, such as an individual’s ability to do their job with excellence and in alignment with the company’s strategic and operational objectives. We do not tolerate discrimination on any basis protected by human rights laws or anti-discrimination regulations, and we strive to do more in this regard than the law requires.

Diversity and Inclusion

We are committed to a work environment where team members are treated with respect and fairness. We value individual differences, unique perspectives, and the distinct contributions that each one of us can make to the company. We are a nationally diverse global company which acts as a positive force for international exchange and understanding. We support internal diversity groups like Women at Work, Mosaic, Mental Health Alliance, Military Veterans and Families, and PRIDE, our employee resource groups that promote diversity and belonging, and encourage our team members to form new groups as they see fit.

Supporting our Local Communities

With over 15,000 team members and offices in more than 40 local communities around the world, our potential to make a positive impact is significant. We encourage team members to participate in meaningful opportunities that strengthen local communities and drive social change. We continue to see examples of the great work done by our team members to support and connect with their local communities, such as charity contributions, fundraisers, and donations of much-needed supplies.

With much of our customer base made up of small and medium businesses, we are committed to helping create equitable economic opportunity for underrepresented communities. From grants and sponsorships, to free design and marketing assistance, to the creation of specialty products and marketplaces, we are leveraging our services, platforms, and partnerships to empower women, people of color (BIPOC), and LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs.

Ensuring an Ethical Supply Chain

We recognize that our purchasing decisions can have a significant social and environmental impact. Our entire supply chain reflects our commitment to doing business with the highest standards of ethics and integrity. We expect our suppliers to act in full compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Our Code of Business Conduct and Supplier Code of Conduct lay out our expectations regarding human rights, environmental standards, and safe working conditions. Our commitment to purchasing FSC® and PEFC certified materials and our in-person social audits further ensure our suppliers act in accordance with our policies and standards. Please refer to the  social responsibility reports webpage for links to relevant documents such as our Supplier Code of Conduct and UK Modern Slavery Act disclosure.
